Just been reading on my Kindle. I pressed the sleep button, and the image it presented was one of pencils.
It reminded me immediately of a friend who loves creativity that involves physical things; she loves typewriters and has started doing Letterpress. And while I love her and her creative ways, and appreciate the beauty in her endeavours, I also noticed that the physical side of creativity is almost abhorrent to me. Some of this comes from not wanting to get my hands dirty, literally. And some of it comes from my perfectionist ideals. The idea that digital is clean, with perfectly angular corners and completely flat colours, appeals to me so deeply.
In my journey towards minimalism I am using far more digital devices and services in order to remove myself from physical objects. I do love collections of things, but this comes from the perfection of complete sets; and since life is short, and ownership is an illusion, digital media suit me far better. The collections can still be there, but without clutter, and the imperfect objects are replaced by digital. Less clutter, less space, and more pure representation.
