My latest experiment: skipping breakfast

I’m not great at following through, or following up. I’ve often stated intentions on this blog, but don’t often come back with results. Which is usually due to the first problem: a lack of commitment.

I checked my weight, and I have hit 270 pounds. Argh! My belly circumference is 48 inches. Also not good.

So, I’m looking to do something to start dropping some of this excess weight. The key factor of my latest attempt will be Intermittent Fasting. Not the 5:2 diet, but on most days, fasting overnight and until lunch time. So not just skipping breakfast, but completely removing all calorie intake between about 10pm through to about 1:30pm. The theory behind this has a few parts:

  • Fewer meals equals fewer calories eaten.
  • The fasting promotes glycogen depletion, and thus burning fat as fuel instead
  • Further beneficial claims (which are more spurious) such as improved insulin response, lower cholesterol, reduced effects of aging etc.

But the first two points at least make some straightforward sense. I plan to throw in the occasional bout of cardio in the mornings, and continue my strength training, but I want to stick with the 12-15 hour fasts to see if those belly inches start to come off.

And hopefully blog about it in the coming weeks.
